An independent spa built around a single belief — that restoration cannot be rushed.
Fiona Mackay spent twelve years as a nurse in Edinburgh's hospitals before quietly realising that the kind of care she most wanted to give — slow, attentive, deeply restorative — wasn't possible inside a healthcare system stretched thin.
She retrained in holistic therapy, spent two years studying Scottish botanical medicine, and in 2017 opened the doors of Cairn & Co. in a Georgian townhouse on Heriot Row. It was, and remains, a deliberate alternative to the city's busier hotel spas.
Almost a decade on, Fiona still treats clients several days a week. She believes the only way to lead a spa well is to keep your hands in the work.
Cairn & Co. occupies the lower three floors of a beautifully preserved 1820s townhouse. The interior has been carefully restored — high ceilings, original cornicing, working shutters and wide-plank floors — and dressed in muted, considered tones.
Six treatment rooms are scattered across the building, each one slightly different in shape and light. A small relaxation lounge serves herbal tea and shortbread between treatments, and a dedicated two-person suite at the rear of the house houses our hot stone treatments.
Original botanical prints, found at estate sales across the Borders, hang in every room.
Four ingredients form the backbone of nearly every treatment we offer. All four are sourced from named Scottish growers and harvesters.
Hand-harvested from the Hebrides. Mineral-rich and deeply remineralising for tired skin.
Gathered from the moorlands of the Cairngorms. Naturally calming and beautifully aromatic.
The base for our compresses and steam rituals. Soft, pure, and quietly mineral.
Cold-pressed from wild Borders rosehips. Rich in vitamin C and quietly restorative.
A small, settled team — most have been with Cairn & Co. for over five years.
Holistic therapist and former nurse. Specialises in bespoke facials and restorative massage.
Trained in aromatherapy and deep tissue massage. Known for her slow, considered touch.
Cidesco-qualified facialist with a particular interest in sensitised and mature skin.
Sports and remedial massage therapist. Our go-to for chronic shoulder and back tension.
Time is the most valuable thing we offer. Nothing here runs to a stopwatch.
Refillable products, recycled packaging, and a no-single-use policy throughout.
Botanicals, linens, ceramics and shortbread — all from named Scottish makers.
We give one free treatment a week to a local NHS worker, nominated by their team.
